How to create shortcut to eject a CD or DVD in Windows 7

Some times you may need to use the CD or DVD for playing music or video files in the CD/DVD. For that purpose, you need to eject the CD / DVD drive and insert the new CD/DVD which you want to play. In this article, I am going to show you how to eject a CD or a DVD by creating a short cut on the desktop so that you can eject the CD/DVD by just clicking on that short cut.

Here are the steps to create a short cut on the desktop to eject a CD/DVD.

  • First you need to download and install a small command line utility called NirCmd. I have written about this utility in the Products section.

  • Once you click on the download link, you will be asked to save a Zip file. Save the Zip file in your computer and then extract the files form the Zip file. You will see nircmd.exe file along with a help file listing various functions which can be performed by nircmd.

  • Now you have the file 'nircmd.exe' copied to some folder in your windows computer. Note down the path to the file 'nircmd.exe'.

  • Now right click anywhere on the desktop of your computer and choose New ->Short Cut in the drop down list. See a screen shot below.

  • Once you click on the New->Short cut, you will be asked for a location of the short cut. In the location box, put the full path to the 'nircmd.exe' file that you downloaded, and append the "cdrom open" command to the end of it, and adjusting the drive letter to match your CD ROM drive. An example is given below.

    "F:\Applications\nircmd\nircmd.exe" cdrom open G:

In the above, the nircmd.exe file is located in 'F' drive in my computer. and the drive letter for the CD-ROM in my computer is G.

  • Now you have to give a suitable name for the Shortcut. and you will see a new icon on the desktop with the name that you have given.( example : Eject CD Drive).

  • Now by just double-clicking on the short cut, you can immediately eject a CD-ROM drive.

  • Now if you want to create a short cut to close the CD ROM drive, follow above instructions and instead of "cdrom open" use "cdrom close".

Hope this article would be useful to all of you.
